Website of the Province of Santa Fe

Santa Fe is an Argentine province in the eastern center of the country. Neighboring provinces, clockwise from north, are Chaco , Corrientes , Entre Ríos , Buenos Aires , Córdoba, and Santiago del Estero . The province is part of the Región Centro .

Sante Fe is one of the most populous provinces in the country. The capital is the eponymous city of Santa Fe with 400,000 inhabitants (500,000 in the metropolitan area). The largest city in the province is Rosario in the south (950,000 inhabitants, 1.2 million in the metropolitan area).

geography

The rich south of the province is fertile and belongs to the humid pampas , with diverse agriculture and livestock farming. The north of the province, on the other hand, belongs to the subtropical Chaco plain and is only sparsely populated. There are no larger surveys in the entire province.

The climate is temperate to subtropical, with warm summers (23–27 ° C) and mild winters (9–15 ° C). The annual precipitation is between 800 mm in the southwest and 1200 mm in the northeast, with summer being much more humid than winter.

population

During the wave of immigration between 1880 and 1920, the province of Santa Fe was the second most populated by European immigrants after Buenos Aires, many of them in the two large cities of Rosario and Santa Fe. In the interior of the provinces, however, many so-called colonias formed , colonies of agricultural settlers, which were often ethnically very homogeneous, that is, they were inhabited by residents of the same country, mainly Italians, Swiss and Germans. Many of these colonies later became cities.

As a result of this immigration, the proportion of mestizo in Santa Fe is relatively low, as in the province of Buenos Aires . However, it is increasing today due to internal migration, especially in Rosario and Santa Fe. In the north of the province there is a small number of indigenous people ( Tobas ).

Former Formula 1 racing driver Carlos Reutemann was governor and senator of the province for a long time.

The province's illiteracy rate is 3.7%, which is average for Argentina.

Bigger cities

  • Rosario , port and industrial city and cultural center of the province, third largest city in Argentina (950,000 inhabitants)
  • Santa Fe , the provincial capital, mainly administrative center, but also industry (500,000 inhabitants)
  • Rafaela , former agricultural colony (110,000 inhabitants)
  • Venado Tuerto , largest city in the southwest of the province (83,000 inhabitants)
  • Reconquista , largest city in the north of the province (75,000 inhabitants)

economy

The economic center is the important export port of Rosario , which also concentrates the industry of the province (especially the automotive and heavy industry), as well as the most important grain exchange in Argentina, whose prices are nationwide as a reference. Another important port is the capital Santa Fe, while the Reconquista to the north has lost its importance as a port city, but is still important as an industrial and agricultural center.

Agriculture is practiced throughout the province, with grain growing and cattle breeding dominating in the south, while cotton and tobacco are grown in the north. Forestry is also important in the north.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Río Paraná between Santa Fe and Rosario was expanded into the so-called Hidrovía , so that it is navigable for smaller ocean -going vessels on this route. From Rosario it is also navigable for larger ships.

traffic

Busy highways in the province are the mostly motorway-like Ruta Nacional 9 (from southeast to west, connecting with Córdoba , San Miguel de Tucumán and San Salvador de Jujuy ) and the Ruta Nacional 34, which branches off from this in Rosario (after Profesor Salvador Mazza , Salta) and Ruta Nacional 11 (destination Clorinda , Formosa). Parallel to Ruta 11, the A029 motorway connects the two largest cities of Rosario and Santa Fe. The Ruta Nacional 19 connects Santa Fe directly with Córdoba and is part of a planned high-speed connection that, when completed, will connect Chile with Brazil via Argentine territory .

history

The indigenous ethnic groups that inhabited this region were the Tobas, Timúes, Mocoviés, Pilagás, Guaycurúes and Guaraníes. They were nomads and made a living from hunting, fishing and gathering fruits.

The first European settlement was established at the confluence of the Paraná and Carcarana rivers in 1527 when Sebastien Gaboto founded a fort called Sancti Spiritus on his way north, which was destroyed by the Indians two years later.

In 1573, the city of Santa Fe was founded by Juan de Garay in the area surrounding today's city of Cayastá, but the city was moved to its current location in 1651 and 1660.

In 1812 the lawyer and general Manuel Belgrano created and spread the Argentine flag for the first time on the banks of the Paraná in Rosario.

In 1815, while the central government had to defend itself against the uprising under Ignacio Alvarez Thomas, Francisco Candioti, the chief of the local military, peacefully took over the government and started the era of Santa Fe as an autonomous province. This period was short-lived as Candioti died that same year and the central government reestablished the dependent government.
