Website of the Province of Corrientes |
Corrientes ( Guaraní : Taragui ) is a province in northeast Argentina . The name comes from the Río Paraná and Río Uruguay , which border the province to the east and west and means something like "rivers".
geography
The province borders in the northeast on the province of Misiones , in the north on Paraguay , in the west on the provinces Chaco and Santa Fe , in the south on the province Entre Ríos and Uruguay and in the east on Brazil .
The province lies between the two rivers Río Paraná and Río Uruguay . In the center there is an extensive marshland, the Esteros del Iberá , which is now a nature reserve. The area is almost completely flat, with the exception of the slightly hilly northeast, which already merges into the Misiones mountains. There is typical savannah vegetation with small forest areas.
economy
The economy is dominated by livestock, agriculture and forestry.
Livestock
Because of the high temperatures and the not very nutritious pastures, especially in the north of the region, the Brangus cattle , a cross between Angus and Brahman, dominate . In the south, the conditions are similar to those of the neighboring province of Entre Ríos, where there is a greater variety of cattle breeds.
agriculture
Agriculture is one of the cornerstones of Corrientes' economy. Mainly citrus fruits, tobacco, rice, mate and cotton are grown.
forestry
Forestry plays a greater role in the center and northeast of the province.
population
Most of the population lives on the banks of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. The provincial capital Corrientes with 350,000 inhabitants and the second largest city in the province, Goya (77,000 inhabitants) are located on Paraná .
