Chamame

The chamamé (also polka correntina ) is a style of folk music in Argentina . It is particularly widespread in the province of Corrientes .

Musically speaking, the chamamé is a dance in 6/8 time, which is very similar to the polka .

The style originated in colonial times, when the Jesuits were trying the Guaraní to proselytize -Indianer. Since many Jesuits came from Eastern Europe, the dances and musical styles of this region - especially the polka - also spread in the Jesuit reductions in South America. The local population mixed these influences with their own music, the chamamé can be seen as a result of this process. A well-known Chamamé musician is accordionist Raúl Barboza .
