Santo Tomé is the capital of the eponymous department of Santo Tomé in the province of Corrientes in northeast Argentina . In the classification of communes in the province of Corrientes, Santo Tomé (Corrientes) is in the 1st category.
Santo Tomé is connected to the Brazilian town of São Borja ( Rio Grande do Sul ) by the Puente de la Integración via the Río Uruguay .
climate
Subtropical climate with average annual temperatures of 20 ° C. The maximum temperature in summer reaches 40 ° C. The winters are mild. The average rainfall is between 1,400 and 1,600 millimeters per year with precipitation peaks in April (autumn) and October (spring).
history
The beginnings of the place go back to the 17th century. After the founding of Yapeyú and La Cruz by Jesuit missionaries, Santo Tomé was founded in 1632 by the Jesuits Luis Ernot and Manuel Bertot with the help of two befriended Guaraní chiefs who had converted to Christianity. The decline began with the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768. In 1817 civil war and the invasion of the Portuguese across the Brazilian border devastated the place. The official founding date of today's city is August 27, 1863.
