São Borja , officially Portuguese Município de São Borja , is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul . As of July 1, 2019, the population was estimated at 60,282 inhabitants, who live on a municipality area of ​​around 3616.7 km² and are called São-Borjenser ( são-borjenses ). It is located 594 km west of the capital Porto Alegre .

The core settlement was founded in 1682 and was the first of the seven Eastern missions ( Sete Povos das Missões ) of the Jesuits . It was granted its first city rights as Vila on October 13, 1817 as Vila de São Francisco de Borja por Alvará , but was not implemented until May 21, 1834. Until then, the area was under the municipality of Rio Pardo in what was then the province of Rio Grande do Sul .

She's border town with Argentina and with the over the Río Uruguay leading bridge since Integração Ponte Internacional with Santo Tomé connected.
