Departments in Argentina

The departments of Argentina are subordinate administrative districts to the provinces . The capital Buenos Aires , like the province of Buenos Aires, is not divided into departments. Instead, in the capital, Barrios (districts) and Comunas , in the province of Buenos Aires, partidos .
Each partido is led by an intendent elected by the population . The departments , on the other hand, are not run by an intendente or other administrative bodies. They gain importance for the decision-making bodies of the provinces. In the province of Santa Fe, a senator is delegated from each department .
Two departments in the province of Tierra del Fuego - Antártida Argentina and Islas del Atlántico Sur - are controversial under international law. With these there are currently 376 without the Partidos of the Province of Buenos Aires. 32 of these departments have no clear names. 75 departments have similar or identical names in other provinces.
