geography

location

Concordia is located on the right bank of the Río Uruguay , which forms the border with Uruguay here, opposite the city of Salto on the Uruquaic bank of the river. About 18 kilometers to the north is the Staudann Salto Grande , which dams the Uruguay River to generate electricity. A road and a railway connection between Concordia and Salto runs over the dam. A little further downstream, the Río Yuquery , which runs south of the city, flows into the Río Uruguay.

history

The first settlements are around 500 years old. Around the year 1700 around came Jesuits in the city, built a small garrison and began to evangelize the Indians. Up until this point in time, Guaranís , Chanás and Charrúas were the main residents of the city.

In 1749 the governor of Buenos Aires, José de Andonaegui, sent an expedition to the Entre Rios area. Tomás de Rocamora, who first named this region "Entre Rios", founded the cities of Concordia, San Antonio de Gualeguay Grande (Gualeguay), Concepción del Uruguay and San José de Gualeguaychú in 1783.
