Salto Grande is a hydroelectric plant located north of the Uruguayan city of Salto and the Argentine city of Concordia . The Río Uruguay is dammed at the point to the reservoir Embalse Salto Grande . This is on the border between Uruguay and Argentina . Its storage capacity is 5 billion cubic meters and its water surface is 783 km².
Construction began in 1974, and electricity was produced from 1979. The hydropower plant is equipped with 14 Kaplan turbines that can generate 1890 megawatts. The flood discharge has a discharge capacity of 64,000 m³ / s.
The barrier structure is 3000 m long, a maximum of 65 m high and consists of an earth embankment combined with a gravity dam . A road and a railway line that connect Uruguay with Argentina run on it.
