The Río Uruguay ( Portuguese Rio Uruguai ) is a river in South America that forms the Río de la Plata together with the Paraná .
The name means something like river of the colorful bird . It is 1816 km long and has its source in the south of the Brazilian mountains , in the state of Santa Catarina . In parts it forms the border between Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul , then it forms the state border between Argentina and Brazil . A little further upstream from El Soberbio is the 2 km long Salto Yucumã waterfall . This is unique in the world and runs parallel to the river. The last 300 km the Uruguay forms the state border between Argentina and the state of Uruguay , which derives its name from the location on this river (Republic of East Uruguay). On this last section there are a total of 13 fortresses built in the 19th century on the Uruguayan side in connection with the country's independence struggles. After restoration, some of these are now used as a museum.
The Río Uruguay is navigable as far as Paysandú , which is significantly less than its "twin river" Paraná , as it has many more rapids . The catchment area is 365,000 km².
