Fray Bentos is the capital of the Río Negro department in Uruguay .
geography
Fray Bentos borders the east bank of the Uruguay River (Río Uruguay) and is around 34 km from the southeastern city of Mercedes .
history
Fray Bentos was founded in 1853 as Villa Independencia . From 1861 onwards, large quantities of meat extract were produced in Fray Bentos by the Liebig's Extract of Meat Company using the method of the German chemist Justus von Liebig . Fray Bentos has lost its importance as the center of the meat industry since the 1930s. The resulting industrial landscape, however, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015 .
Infrastructure
The road bridge Puente Libertador General San Martín opened in 1976 over the Río Uruguay, which connects Fray Bentos with the Argentine Puerto Unzué and which has the shortest land connection to Buenos Aires , the capital of the neighboring country, is an important traffic connection .
The Ruta 2 trunk road , which begins near Rosario in the south of the country, ends in Fray Bentos .
