Liebig's Extract of Meat Company
Liebig's Extract of Meat Company ( LEMCO ) was a British company that developed and marketed the stock cube from the meat extract researched by Justus von Liebig in the 1880s .
history
The company was founded in London and later had its main operations in Fray Bentos , Uruguay , and on the Neuheusis farm in South West Africa (now Namibia ), where large cattle farms were located. The Liebig house is still located on Neuheusis today .
The company also became known for its collector's pictures , so-called Liebig pictures . The products of Liebig's Extract of Meat Company achieved great popularity because meat was a luxury for a large part of the population. The upper classes of society also bought Liebig's meat extracts. The company supplied the Viennese court and was appointed supplier to the imperial court .
In 1964 Liebig's and the global tea company Brook Bond & Company, founded by Arthur Brook in Manchester in 1869, merged to form Brook Bond Liebig Co. This was later taken over by the Unilever group. The successor company is Oxo .
The former factory in Fray Bentos now houses a museum about the company.
