The production of the OXO cubes is based on the work of Justus von Liebig and Georg Christian Giebert . Originally (around 1840) the liquid meat extract was needed for those who could not afford meat . It was also used medicinally against malnutrition .

The name OXO was created in 1899 , and in 1910 the less expensive dice came onto the market for the first time from the factories in Uruguay . In the First World War they were part of the emergency rations of the English troops. Around 100 million pieces were produced in the four years of the war.

An improvement in the product in 1929 and massive advertising campaigns made OXO an institution in England, comparable in terms of awareness to the Maggi wort or Knorr soups in Germany.
