Paysandú is the capital of the Paysandú department of the same name in Uruguay .
geography
It is located on the east bank of the Uruguay River (Río Uruguay) , on the other side of the river lies a little to the north - connected to Paysandú by the General Artigas Bridge - the small Argentine town of Colón . The Uruguayan highway Ruta 3 runs to the east of the city .
history
The city was founded in 1772 by a priest named Sandú.
Residents
With around 75,000 inhabitants, Paysandú is the fourth largest city in the country after Montevideo , Ciudad de la Costa and Salto .
Economy and Infrastructure
It is an important industrial location. In addition to the wool, textile and leather industries, the food industry ( sugar , beer ) is also important. The city's agricultural faculty is one of the few colleges in the country outside of Montevideo .
Attractions
The city has a church with the name Nuestra Señora del Rosario y San Benito de Palermo, which is well-known beyond the borders . It was built in 1860, made a Basilica minor in 1949 and has been a Monumento Histórico Nacional since 1997 . In the basilica there is an organ by the German organ builder Oskar Walcker from 1906 with 23 registers, two manuals and a pedal. This historic organ was restored in 1997 by Gebr. Oberlinger Orgelbau , Windesheim, with the help of the Federal Republic of Germany .

The city's stadium is the Estadio Parque Artigas . The most important football club in Paysandús is Paysandú Bella Vista . Another football club that has significantly less support in the population is Paysandú FC . The rugby club Trébol Rugby is also based in Paysandú.
