Guillermo Douglas

Guillermo Douglas , full name Guillermo Rafael Douglas Sabattini , (born January 1909 in Paysandú , † 1967 ) was a Uruguayan rower .

The 1.93 meter tall Douglas began his rowing career at Club Remeros Paysandú . He was later a member of the Montevideo Rowing Club . In 1931 he won the first South American rowing championships (Primer Certamen Sudamericano de Remo) in the Bay of Montevideo and was thus South American champion. He was a member of the Uruguayan squad at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles . At the Games in the USA he won the bronze medal behind the Australian Bobby Pearce (gold) and the American Bill Miller (silver) in the rowing one at Long Beach Marine Stadium on August 12, 1932 . For the 2,000 meter long rowing course he needed 8: 13.6 minutes in this final run. This made him the first Uruguayan and the first Latin American to win precious metal at the Olympic Games in this discipline. In 1935 he won silver at the Second South American Rowing Championships in Rio de Janeiro . He was also able to achieve numerous successes at the national level.
