Nicolás Lodeiro , full name Marcelo Nicolás Lodeiro Benítez , (born March 21, 1989 in Paysandú ) is a Uruguayan football player on the position of an attacking midfielder and winger . He has been playing in Major League Soccer for Seattle Sounders since 2016 .
Club career
From a small local club to one of the largest clubs in Uruguay
Lodeiro was born in 1989 in Paysandú on the border with Argentina . His father was the member of the Partido Nacional , who died on June 20, 2011, as Edil active in Paysandú politician Alfonso Lodeiro, who also had some successes as a football player. Nicolás Lodeiro began his active career as a football player in the youth division of the Paysandú-based amateur club Barrio Obrero . In 2001 he worked for the youth team from the city of Canelones in the Salinas football tournament , where he was spotted for the first time by scouts from the major Uruguayan club Nacional Montevideo . After a week's trial training at the club from the Uruguayan capital Montevideo , Lodeiro moved to the U-14 team of the venerable club in 2003. The scout Daniel López , who had already discovered various other talents, such as Gonzalo Castro Irizábal , Juan Ángel Albín or Bruno Fornaroli , gave the tip to bring the young and committed offensive player into the team.
Lodeiro's parents only agreed to join the youth of Nacional Montevideo if the club would pay for the cost of attending a private school, which the club eventually did. After he went to the capital, he was found an apartment at a very young age in the immediate vicinity of the club's headquarters, from where he was not far from his club's training sessions and games. Even in Lodeiro's early teens, the youth coaches knew about the boy's extraordinary talent and later compared him, as well as various media, with the Argentinian FIFA World Player of the Year 2009, Lionel Messi , who was also very successful in his youth .
After he was already successful with the U-17 and U-20 teams of the club and celebrated a championship title each with both teams, he was included in the squad of the professional team with play in the Primera División for the first time in 2007 . He finally made his professional debut on August 19, 2007, the first game of Apertura 2007, in a 1-1 away draw against Centro Atlético Fénix . Almost three and a half months passed when Lodeiro finally scored his first goal for the team on December 1, 2007. He scored the only goal of the encounter in the 1-0 away win over the ailing Club Atlético Progreso . About the Liguilla Pre-Libertadores , in which Lodeiro also scored a goal against River Plate , the team came to the Copa Libertadores 2008 , where it was eliminated in the round of 16 with a total score of 0-2 from the return leg against São Paulo FC .
Semi-finals in the Copa Libertadores and national success
In the Torneo Apertura 2008, the entire team performed well and, after completing 15 league games with the same number of points and the same number of wins, draws and defeats, but a goal difference less than two goals, came second in the final table. In a play-off game against the first-placed Danubio FC , the winner of the Torneo Apertura had to be determined; Lodeiros's side won the game 2-1 away. The final championship playoff in 2008/09 was finally won by the Apertura champions Nacional Montevideo with a total score of 4: 2 over the Clausura champions Defensor Sporting Club , with Lodeiro also scoring in the final.
In the Copa Libertadores 2009 , which ran between January and July 2009 , in which the left-footed player often acted as a goal scorer or template provider, the team made it to the semi-finals , where they finally won 3-1 against Estudiantes de La Plata from Argentina from the current competition retired.
At Torneo Apertura 2009 Lodeiro gave his best offensive performance to date, scoring seven goals in just eight appearances in Uruguay's top division. At the end of the championship, Nacional Montevideo was a comfortable distance behind the rest of the league in first place, with the team winning 13 of their 15 league encounters.
For 4 million euros to Ajax
After a successful time at Nacional Montevideo, the left-footed player signed a well-paid contract with the Dutch record champions Ajax Amsterdam on January 22, 2010 . The club from the port city of Amsterdam transferred a total of four million euros for the transfer of Lodeiros to Uruguay, with Nacional Montevideo itself still having 15% of the income from a possible resale of the striker guaranteed. In addition to the Dutch record champions, other clubs such as AZ Alkmaar , SSC Napoli or Liverpool FC were interested in the small offensive player. At Ajax he signed a two and a half year contract. At his new club he was given the shirt number 45.
Lodeiro finally made his team and league debut on February 7, 2010 in a 3-0 home win over FC Twente Enschede , where he came on the pitch in the 83rd minute for Marko Pantelić . On April 11, 2010, the young attacking midfielder made his first assist for Ajax Amsterdam when he came on for Siem de Jong in a clear 7-0 victory over VVV-Venlo in the 63rd minute and Pantelić's goal for 6th minute : 0 leadership prepared. By the end of the 2009/10 season , the Uruguayan completed a total of eight league games, in which he was mostly on the field for only a few minutes. In the end, Lodeiro, together with his compatriot Luis Suárez and the entire team, only finished second in the final table, one point behind, but a goal difference better by 46 goals.
In the KNVB Cup of the 2009/10 season things went better for Ajax Amsterdam. In the final, which was played in a return leg, Ajax won with a total score of 6-1 over Feyenoord Rotterdam . Lodeiro was used in the semi-final game against the Go Ahead Eagles and, after being substituted on shortly before, scored the 6-0 goal for his team via direct free kick. In 2010/11 and 2011/12 he was Dutch champion with Ajax.

Seattle Sounders FC
On July 27, 2016, he moved to the Seattle Sounders, trained by Sigi Schmid , for a transfer fee of around 5.5 million euros . He signed a three-year contract and got the shirt number 10. He scored two goals in four games in the cup.
National team career
U-20

During the tournament, the entire team performed well and made it to the round of 16 of the competition , where they ultimately failed 3-1 at the eventual finalists Brazil. At the Junior World Cup, the then 20-year-old played in four international matches, in which he scored two goals for his home country. In the technical report of the tournament Lodeiro is listed as one of three outstanding players on his team and is described as "strong on the ball, tireless effort, playmaker with good passing play and strong shots from long range, agile, fast, intelligent ".
Before that, the offensive player and ball artist already took part in the U-20 South American Championship of 2009 , in which he and the team reached third place in the tournament, which was played in purely group games. He made a total of 21 international matches during his membership in Uruguay's U-20 national team and scored six goals. With the good performance in the U-20 national team, Lodeiro made a name for himself among those responsible for the senior national team in Uruguay .
A national team
In November 2009 Lodeiro was finally appointed to the senior team by Uruguayan head coach Óscar Tabárez . Lodeiro finally made his debut on November 14, 2009 in the relegation first leg after the World Cup qualification against Costa Rica , when he was on the pitch from the start and was replaced by Jorge Marcelo Rodríguez from the 61st minute of the game . The game ended in a 1-0 Uruguayan away win. In his second appearance only four days later in the second leg against Costa Rica, he and the team fixed participation in the 2010 World Cup , as the team's second leg draw was 1-1 enough for qualification.
In May 2010, Lodeiro was nominated by Tabárez in Uruguay's provisional 30-man squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and remained in his home country's final 23-man squad after some players were deleted. Play style
The comparison with the world footballer of 2009, Lionel Messi, is no coincidence. With his talent, good physique and well-developed game intelligence, left-footed Lodeiro is very similar to the Argentine star striker. According to Daniel Enríquez , the sports director of Nacional Montevideo, the barely 1.73 m tall Lodeiro has a great shot and is a very good pass and cross giver.
