Qualification for Copa Libertadores
Copa Sudamericana

The Primera División Argentina (officially since 2020 Liga Profesional de Fútbol (LFP) or Liga Profesional for short ) is the highest Argentine football league . It has existed since 1985 as the successor to the Campeonato de Primera División (1891–1966) and the Torneo Metropolitano (1967–1985) and is operated and organized by the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA). There are currently 24 clubs playing in the league(Status: 2019/2020 season). The league has a special status among the Argentine fans, as the championship was for a long time the only national title that a club could win. After two editions in 1969 and 1970, there has only been a national cup competition ( Copa Argentina ) since 2011 and the Supercopa Argentina since 2012 .

The Argentine league leads the way in South America with the Brazilian league. This is particularly evident in the clubs' international successes. So far, Argentine clubs have won the most important international South American competition for club teams, the Copa Libertadores, with 25 titles (as of 2018) .

mode

After the reform of the game mode in 2012, i.e. from the 2012/13 season, the rounds were played separately under the names Torneo Inicial and Torneo Final , but there is only one champion per season. The first two from the half of the season will meet in a final. The winner of this final is the Argentine champions. Round-trip rounds of a season were held as separate championships until 2011/12 ( Apertura and Clausura system). In the 2013/14 season, the mode was changed back to the first and second round championship. The superfinal of the champions from Torneo Inicial and Torneo Final is a title of its own.

Since 2015, the Primera División has been held with 26 participants and a single champion has been played. The 25 games per team consist of a single round and an additional derby. From the 2016/17 season, the championship will no longer be played every calendar year, but the calendar will be adapted to the European leagues.

For the 2019/2020 season, the number of teams was reduced from 26 to 24, although the mode was retained (23 games and an additional derby). The reason for this change was to make room in the schedule for the Copa de la Superliga, which will be played in a new format.

The descent is based on the point average over the last four (up to 2014: three) years; in the case of promoted players, only the games in the Primera División since the last promotion are taken into account. The two (up to 2014: three) teams with the worst point average are relegated directly to the Primera B Nacional . The relegation games that existed until 2011/2012 were abolished.
