Club career

Hugo Gatti came from the youth department of Club Atlético Atlanta , a smaller club from the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . In the year of the club's greatest success, winning the Copa Suecia in 1960, Gatti's time began in the youth of Atlanta, two years later he was accepted into the senior division. From now on, the goalkeeper guarded the club's goal in thirty league games until 1964. In 1964 he was signed by River Plate and came to 77 league appearances in the jersey of River Plate, which he wore from 1964 to 1968. In 1969 Hugo Gatti moved to Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata in the capital of the province of Buenos Aires of the same name. At Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata he was immediately a regular and came in the following six years to 1974 to 224 games in the professional team of the club. A great success was not achieved with the midfield club of the Primera División .

After a year-long interlude at Unión de Santa Fe , Hugo Gatti joined Boca Juniors in 1976 . Under coach Juan Carlos Lorenzo , who had previously trained Gatti at Unión de Santa Fe, the club had one of its most successful phases ever. In 1976 (two titles) and 1981 the Argentine soccer championship could be won three times. In addition, the Boca Juniors penetrated twice in 1977 and 1978 into the finals of the Copa Libertadores , the most important football competition for club teams in South America , and won both finals against Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte and Deportivo Cali . In both Libertadores seasons, Gatti was one of the absolute regulars in Lorenzo's team, in 1977 he played all three finals, a play-off was necessary after it had been drawn after two legs, and the second leg in 1978 after Carlos Rodríguez represented him in the first final would have. In 1977 Hugo Gatti won the World Cup with the Boca Juniors, where he played with players such as Alberto Tarantini , Rubén Suñé and Francisco Sá , among others , by beating Borussia Mönchengladbach , the defeated finalist of the 1976/77 European Cup . In 1978 the World Cup was not held.

Hugo Gatti played for Boca Juniors from 1976 to 1988 and during that time he made 381 league games with one goal for the club. Last year he ended his active career at the age of 44. With a total of 765 games in the Primera División, he is still the player with the most appearances in the Argentine elite league. In addition, his 26 league penalties are another record in this league. Hugo Gatti is also known for his style of play, which was very much based on that of the former River Plate goalkeeper Amadeo Carrizo , whom he once watched playing football in 1960 as a 16-year-old and whose style he liked very much. As one of the few goalkeepers of his time, his actions on the field were shaped by acting as a kind of eleventh outfield player, he often left the penalty area and also helped with his own attacks. In 1982, at the age of 38, Hugo Gatti was named Argentina's Footballer of the Year and ranks third in the International Federation of Football History & Statistics ranking of the best goalkeepers in the country for the 20th century .

National team

Between 1967 and 1977 Hugo Gatti was used in eighteen international matches of the Argentine national football team . Without having first made a full international, he became national coach Juan Carlos Lorenzo into the squad for the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England called. In the tournament, however, he was not used and was always number 2 behind Antonio Roma . A good year after the World Cup, he made his first international match against Paraguay on August 13, 1967 . In the following years Gatti was used again and again in the national team. Since Argentina missed the qualification for the soccer world championship in Mexico in 1970 and he was not in the squad for the world tournament in Germany in 1974 , the goalkeeper did not experience another world championship. Before the 1978 World Cup in his own country, he played some friendly matches under César Luis Menotti , who eventually gave preference to Ubaldo Fillol . Hugo Gatti made his last international match on June 5, 1977.
