Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata is an Argentine sports club from the city of La Plata , the capital of the province of Buenos Aires . The association was founded on June 3, 1887. Initially, its members dedicated themselves to fencing ( esgrima ) and gymnastics ( gimnasia ), from which the name that the club bears to this day comes from. The soccer division , which now dominates club operations, was added later. In addition, volleyball , basketball , tennis , hockey , athletics , boxing , fencing, martial arts , artistic gymnastics , artistic roller skating , indoor football and swimming are practiced in the club .

Since 1924, the club's professional football team has played its home games at the Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo , which seats 33,000. Only from 2006 to 2008 did they move to the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata. The club colors are white and dark blue.

Gimnasia, together with local rivals Estudiantes de La Plata, is one of the two traditional clubs of the city of La Plata. Since the founding of the Argentine professional league in 1931, Gimnasia played most of the time in the Primera División .

successes

In 1929 the club won its first title and its second and last in 1994; the Copa Centenario. Gimnasia was runner-up in 1924, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002 and 2005 and participated several times in the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, but unsuccessfully.
