Jakub from Stadice

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jakub ( 15th century ) was a Czech peasant, also known as the King of Stadice .

The simple rural population was disappointed by the consequences of the Hussite movement and looked for a way out of their ongoing misery. This leads to a movement with social and religious aspects, including the farmer Jakub. In 1445 he built himself a hut in Stadice , a place where the Přemysl the plowman tilled his field according to legend, and proclaimed himself the peasant king. The place slowly turned into a place of pilgrimage. After the number of pilgrims grew more and more, the local nobility, with the help of the Hussite captain Jakoubek z Vřesovic, intervened and imprisoned Jakub. The newly created movement then came to an abrupt end. The farmer's approach points to the dissatisfaction and disappointment of the rural population with regard to the political situation and the power relations at the time.
