Jorge González (born January 31, 1966 in El Colorado , Formosa , Argentina , † September 22, 2010 in General José de San Martín , Argentina - better known as "El Gigante" and "Giant González" ) was an Argentine wrestler and basketball player . Gonzáles worked as a wrestler for the two largest wrestling organizations in North America. Because of his extraordinary stature, he was also seen in several TV series and films as a supporting actor.

Career

González made his first career as a professional athlete as a basketball player, initially with the Argentine teams Hindú Club de Resistencia , Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata and Sport Club de Cañada de Gómez . Due to his enormous size - already at the age of 16 he measured 2.19 meters - González quickly attracted the attention of the then Argentinian national coach León Najnudel , who nominated him for the national selection . At the 1985 South American Basketball Championship , González won the bronze medal with the team.

In the 1988 NBA Draft he was selected by the Atlanta Hawks , the counter sum for his right to play was 30,000 Argentine Austral . González was one of the first Argentines to be drafted into the NBA , along with fellow countryman Hernán Montenegro (selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the same draft ) . Wrestling

In 1989 he signed a contract as a professional wrestler at World Championship Wrestling and appeared from the following year under the name El Gigante for the WCW. Although he was involved in feuds with Ric Flair for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and against Sid Vicious and One Man Gang , his career was relatively unsuccessful.

After a few appearances at New Japan Pro Wrestling , he moved to the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) in 1993 , where he stepped into the role of the giant villain Giant González . He got Harvey Wippleman as manager and had a feud with Undertaker that ended in a "gravedigger" victory. At the beginning of October of that year it was announced that the contract with González had not been extended and that he had left the doctorate. From 1994 he made some appearances for the Japanese promotions New Japan Pro Wrestling and Wrestle and Romance , but had to end his career in early 1995 due to persistent health problems.

Private

González had been in a wheelchair since October 2009 and had to undergo dialysis treatment for kidney failure.

On September 22, 2010, at the age of 44, he died of severe diabetes in a hospital in General José de San Martín.

González was particularly apparent because of his enormous physical size. In 1988 he reached a height of 2.29 m and a weight of 183 kg. To date, he is the greatest known Argentine basketball player. In 2000, after his active career, he was measured again and even came to 2.32 m due to his growth disease. He was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the greatest professional wrestler of all time before Max Palmer . It was announced several times at 2.44 m (8 ft.)
