Hercules in the realm of the dead gods (Original title: Hercules in the Underworld ) is an American fantasy film by Bill L. Norton from 1994. It is the fourth part of a five-part film series, which followed from 1995 to 1999 the television series Hercules .

action

After Hercules, who has now settled down and, with his wife Deïaneira and three children, has killed the boxer Eryz sent by Hera in a duel, he once again destroys a temple of his divine enemy. Later he is visited by the Nuric virgin Iole, who asks him to help the inhabitants of her city against a hole from which death flows, whereupon the demigod with Iole and the centaur Nessus , a follower of Hera, set off there embarks.

Shortly after her departure, Deïaneira learns from an old woman that nuric virgins can make any man fall in love with her and that the person concerned then tries to solve any dangerous task they ask, even if he is threatened with death. Deïaneira hurries after her husband to warn him. But when she caught up with him, he told her not to worry as he already knew about the power of virgins and he would only die for them. Hercules continues the journey with Iole. Meanwhile, Nessus gets the order to accompany Deïaneira safely back to her hut. Alone with the centaur, however, she is violently harassed by those who desire her, so that she calls for help. Hercules hears their screams from afar and shoots an arrow at Nessus, causing him to fall to the ground, fatally hit. Lying dying, the centaur is remorseful. He confesses to having done everything out of love and advises Deïaneira to give Hercules his cloak, which is now soaked in magical centaur blood, because as soon as the demigod put it on, he could never again be unfaithful to Deïaneira. When Hercules, who hurried back, reaches Deïaneira, she follows the advice of the deceased, armors her husband with the enchanted cloak and sends him away with Iole.

Arrived in Iole's city, Hercules walks through human remains and burning buildings to the hole from which death flows, the gullet to the underworld . Immediately in front of it he stops, contemplating whether to descend or not. Then his father Zeus appears and finally tells him that he is mortal. Thinking of his family, Hercules decides to refrain from his plan, whereupon Iole tries in vain to seduce him. On his way home, the demigod puts on the enchanted coat against the nightly cold, but instead of protecting it, the uncomfortable coat torments its wearer by choking, hitting and burning him. When Hera reveals himself to be the creator of the work, Hercules is so angry that he jumps into the throat of hell in a madness.

After surviving a fall, Hercules meets the ferryman Charon , who takes him across the Dead River Styx to the realm of Hades . There he fights his way through three Gorgon-like women, a horde of dead and those he himself sent into the underworld. He defeats Eryz the boxer one more time and then meets Nessus, from whom he learns that Deïaneira is in the Elysian Fields because she, believing Hercules died because of her, took her life as planned by Hera. Hercules provides Hades then adjoined by recently from his chain torn-off Cerberus recapture if this in return allows him again take Deianeira back to the living. The god of the dead agrees, so Hercules goes hunting. After a long fight with his adversary, he can push the three-headed man into a corner and use friendly words to convince him to return to his place at the gates of hell. The gullet to the underworld closes immediately. Reunited with his Deïaneira, Hercules returns to the earthly kingdom.
