history
In 1972 the KEMC station in Billings started with an output of 10 watts. The station belonged to Eastern Montana College. In 1978, the transmission power was increased to 24.5 kW, which means that for the first time the signal could be heard much further than beyond the vicinity of the campus. In 1984, KEMC became the second station in Montana to become a member of National Public Radio. In the following decade, KEMC built a network of converters and repeater stations across Montana. Today the network of local stations and converters has the greatest geographical coverage of all stations in the NPR system.
In 1994, KEMC finally changed its name to Yellowstone Public Radio , due to the fact that the network covers most of the Yellowstone National Park area. In the same year, the broadcast building, which had been in use since 1983, was renamed Joseph L. Sample Studios after the radio pioneer from Montana .
