Sheridan is a city in Sheridan County and is located in the state of Wyoming in the United States .

geography

The city is on the edge of the Bighorn National Forest , 150 kilometers east of Billings and approximately 220 kilometers north of Casper and is right on the Interstate 90 highway.

history

The name of the city goes back to Major General Philip Sheridan , who fought in the area in the American Civil War and later fought numerous conflicts with the Indians . After a railway line ran through the area at the end of the 19th century, numerous people settled there. The first industries to sprout in the region included coal mines, mills, breweries, and cattle ranches. In 1900 there were 5,122 people in Sheridan.

Even today, coal mining is still an important industry. In addition, tourism activities are increasingly being developed, including trekking tours in the Bighorn Mountains or the Bozeman Trail, as well as the organization of rodeos . Numerous winter sports activities are offered in winter, for example snowmobile tours .

Sheridan is also mentioned in some Winnetou books and CDs. (Does not apply to "The Treasure in Silver Lake"; it refers to Sheridan in Kansas - whether this applies in general should be checked.)
