The Bighorn National Forest is a national forest located in Wyoming . The area covers an area of ​​4,482 km² and was named after the Bighorn River . It is almost exclusively at an altitude of over 1,500 m above sea level. The largest elevation is Cloud Peak in the Bighorn Mountains at 4,020 m . It is one of the oldest national forests in the United States. Like all national forests, it is federally owned and is used intensively for forestry purposes.

There are 32 campsites within the forest, as well as a ski area and over 2,400 km of hiking trails.

Flora and fauna

The forests are mainly dominated by coastal pines , spruces and firs . In addition come poplars frequent. In the unforested areas, sweet grasses and Artemisia species occur.

In addition to the bighorn sheep are black bears , pronghorn and Pumas before. The larger bird species include the bald eagle and golden eagle .

Protected areas within the forest

With the Cloud Peak Wilderness there is a total reserve, which is designated as a Wilderness Area . The Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark can also be found here.
