She has since disappeared, only the Notre-Dame d'Abet chapel is all that remains of her. The parish belonged to the archdeaconate of the diocese of Dax , in the 15th century it became a place of pilgrimage due to a miraculous spring called la fontaine d'Abet . Important personalities therefore went to Lahontan, including Michel de Montaigne , as it is known that he stayed in the castle of Lahontan.

Toponyms and mentions of Lahontan were:

  • Lafontaa (13th century, fors de Béarn , manuscript from the 14th century),
  • Larfontan (13th century, copy book of the Diocese of Bayonne ),
  • Larfontaa (around 1360, documents from Came),

Attractions

  • Parish church of Lahontan, dedicated to Maria Magdalena . Erected in the 17th century, the church was the chapel of Lahontan's castle. In 1779 it was elevated to the parish church of the community, and in 1807 it was restored according to plans by Conor, Orthez's town architect , and mason Jacques Cassou. From 1848 to 1850, the church was again restored according to plans by the architect Henri d'Arnaudat, after the project of a new building elsewhere was rejected. A series of eleven glass windows were installed towards the end of the 19th century. After the roof and walls of the choir collapsed and the roof of the nave was damaged, the choir was rebuilt between 1913 and 1916 according to plans by the architect Carresse. Today's long building contains three naves with a length of four bays , separated by arched arcades. The bell tower above the entrance porch has a roof made of slate , a very common type of construction in the Béarn.
  • Notre-Dame Chapel by Abet. The small village of Abet was destroyed by relocation of the Gave de Pau. A legend tells that a farmer discovered a statuette of the Virgin Mary . As a result, the chapel was built at the site, which served as the parish church of the community until 1779. It was mentioned in 1472 in deeds of the notaries of Labastide-Villefranche in the form Nostre-Done de Dabet . During the Huguenot Wars it suffered from attacks by Protestant troops under Gabriel de Lorges , Count of Montgomery in 1560. During the French Revolution , it was closed on January 12, 1794. In 1833 the roof collapsed. In 1848 a project was supposed to be started and later abandoned that called for the demolition of the chapel and the recycling of the building materials for the restoration of the parish church of Lahontan, but in 1887 the choir was restored according to the original plans and in 1902 the chapel was rebuilt makeshift. In 1916 the sacristy was added, and from 1939 to 1943 the chapel was enlarged with the construction of the two aisles. Leaded glass windows were supplied by the glass painter Arcencam from Pau in 1917 , by Henri Gesta from Toulouse in 1932 and 1934 , by Bordelais Chauffrey around 1950 and by Biarrot Jean Lesquibe from 1961 to 1962. Today's large nave has a length of five bays, the side aisles are separated by arcades with pointed arches. From the outside, the massive bell tower above the entrance porch is impressive. The wooden statuette, which has been carefully preserved since the 15th century, depicts the Madonna with baby Jesus and is the destination of an annual pilgrimage. It is made in a style of naive art that is characteristic of the late Middle Ages. The faces of Mary and the baby Jesus reveal a clumsiness of the artist, which is also reflected in the elaboration of the folds of Mary's cloak. The chapel contains a processional cross from the 15th century that survived the excesses of the French Revolution. The copper cross is placed on a wooden pole , its arms with many passports end in the form of irises . The small body of the crucified Christ seems to melt into the cross. The statuette and the lecture cross are registered as national cultural assets.
