Camou-Cihigue lies in the catchment area of the Adour River . A tributary of the season , the Ruisseau d'Ibargonéa, also known as Ruisseau Guéchala, and its tributaries Péko Ibar Erreka and Ossinague Erreka flow through the municipality.
history
Camou-Cihigue is located in the middle of a mountainous landscape with several deep grottos . In one of these caves, archaeologists have uncovered traces of human use in the Upper Paleolithic . It is painted in two places with motifs depicting horses , ibex and bison .
Few records of the history of the two places, which have formed the municipality of Camou-Cihigue since 1836, have survived over the centuries. Cihigue is mentioned at least as Cihiga in the Coutume de Soule in 1520 . On the map of Cassini 1750, Camou is entered in its current form of name, Cihigue as Sihigue . Since the French Revolution in 1793, Cihigue has been officially listed under its current toponym .
Population development
After a high of 371 inhabitants in 1836, the number has continuously decreased to below 100 during short phases of stabilization. This downward trend seems to persist to this day.

Attractions
- Church in Camou, dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . Romanesque elements of the building testify to the medieval origins of the church. The single nave nave is covered with a slate roof with a high pitch . A small belfry with a polygonal spire rises above the gable on the west side . Above the entrance door, an inscription shows the year 1884, a reference to the period of restoration. Another restoration took place at the end of the 19th century. In 1912 the church was fitted with new glass windows by the glass painter Saint-Blancat from Toulouse .
- Church in Cihigue, dedicated to Mary , mother of Jesus of Nazareth . Its construction also dates from the Middle Ages in the Romanesque, as can be seen from its apse . The building was restored in 1828, as evidenced by an inscription on the lintel of the entrance. The wooden tabernacle inside the church is completely gilded. The representations are worked out as a bas-relief on its surface. A statue of Jesus standing upright with his hands folded takes up the entire door. This representation is called “Christ at rest” in Christian imagery. It represents the moment of passion after Christ was stripped of his clothes and before he was nailed to the cross. In this depiction, Christ is holding a reed in his hand that his guards had given him as a mockery. Above the door, God the Father is depicted, pointing his fingers towards heaven, below is a cherub . On one wall, a wooden statue from the 15th century depicts Christ crucified.
- Camou thermal spring. At an altitude of 210 m , the salty, 33.5 ° C warm water hits the surface in a grotto. Its chemical composition gives it a healing effect for rheumatic and gynecological problems or for poor growth in children. Numerous attempts to further develop the thermal spring and to address a larger customer base than those from the Soule and the Béarn have so far been unsuccessful.
Economy and Infrastructure
Agriculture is one of the most important economic factors in the municipality. Camou-Cihigue is located in the AOC zones of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".
traffic
