Sauveterre-de-Béarn is a French commune with 1,375 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the Canton of Orthez et Terres des Gaves et du Sel (until 2015: Canton Sauveterre-de-Béarn ). The inhabitants are called Sauveterriens .
geography
Sauveterre-de-Béarn is located about 47 kilometers west-northwest of Pau on the Gave d'Oloron . Sauveterre-de-Béarn is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Salies-de-Béarn in the north, Burgaronne in the east and northeast, Andrein in the east, Barraute-Camu in the southeast, Saint-Gladie-Arrive-Munein in the south, and Guinarthe-Parenties in the south South-west, Autevielle-Saint-Martin-Bideren in the west, Athos-Aspis in the west and north-west and Oraàs in the north-west.
The former Route nationale 133 (today's D933) and Via Lemovicensis , one of the four historical " Routes of the St. James pilgrims in France ", run through the municipality .
history
During the Middle Ages, one of the most important bridges on the road to Spain was located here. The medieval town center still bears witness to its importance at the time.
