Lourdios-Ichère is a French municipality with 141 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the Canton of Oloron-Sainte-Marie-1 (until 2015: Canton of Accous ).

The name in the Gascognischen language is Ardiòs-Ishèra . The inhabitants are called Lourdiossiens and Lourdiossiennes .

Lourdios-Ichère is located approx. 25 km south of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the Aspetal in the historic province of Béarn .

history

Two cromlechs near the source of the Arrec de Laünde on the northern flank of the Saraiilé mountain indicate an early settlement of the area. The current municipality was created in 1820 by separating the hamlets of Lourdios and Ichère from the municipalities of Osse and Sarrance. Lourdios was mentioned in a document in 1695 in the form of Ordios on the occasion of a count in the Vicomté des Aspetals.

Population development

After a peak in the number of inhabitants after the founding of the municipality in the 19th century with around 680 inhabitants, the rural exodus began and reduced the number considerably by the 1980s to a level of around 150 inhabitants, which is still held today.

Attractions

  • Parish church of Lourdios-Ichère, dedicated to St. Isidore. It was built towards the end of the 17th century, as evidenced by an inscription with the year "1674" above the side entrance on the south side. The building is undoubtedly a new construction of a simple church. It consists of a nave with main and side aisles , a bell tower above the entrance porch and a flat closed apse . The bell tower was rebuilt in 1859, the north aisle was built in 1890. Inside the church there is a sarcophagus altar , an altarpiece with pilasters and pediment as well as statues in the style of naive art .
  • Aspetal Ecomuseum. It shows the life of yesterday and today in the mountain region in three communities of the Aspetal with one topic each. The exhibits in the museum in Lourdios-Ichère are themed “A village tells about itself and about rural life to the rhythm of the seasons”.

Agriculture and tourism are the main economic factors in the municipality. Lourdios-Ichère is located in the AOC zones of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".

Jean Lassalle , born on May 3, 1955 in Lourdios-Ichère, is a French politician. He has been the mayor of his home municipality since 1977, and has been a member of the National Assembly for the department since 2002 . He ran for the center- liberal movement of Résistons, which he founded ! in the 2017 presidential election in France and reached seventh place out of eleven candidates in the first ballot.
