history

During the early Middle Ages , Charre was part of the western defensive belt of the Viscount of Béarn facing the territory of the Viscount of Dax , in this capacity an outpost of Sauveterre and Navarrenx . Viscount Gaston VII de Béarn de Moncade had a castle built on a hill south of the village center in 1287 to protect the ford of Cherbeleys, the passage of the heavy artillery. This was subordinate to the garrison, which was housed in the circular wall of the community. Some of today's houses still bear traces of this curtain wall, which they integrated into their construction. In the census of Viscount Gaston Fébus , 27 households and belonging to the Bailliage of Sauveterre were noted in Sxarre .

Further toponyms and mentions were subsequently:

  • Xarra (1513, documents from the Viscount of Béarn) and
  • Sanctus Petrus de Charre (1618, incorporated into the Diocese of Oloron ).

In the 17th century, Charre was the capital of the Mongaston Viguerie . On the map of Cassini in 1750, the municipality is entered in its current name, it was listed as Charre Haute during the French Revolution in 1793 , and eight years later during the French Consulate in its current name.

Population development

After the highest number of inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century with 550 inhabitants, the number has been reduced by around two thirds during short-term growth phases.

Attractions

  • Local church dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . Like most Catholic churches in Béarns, the original, simple local church of Charre was destroyed in the Huguenot Wars . In the 17th century the church was finally rebuilt, restored from 1881 to 1883. At the same time, the four-story bell tower was built as an entrance porch. From 1885 to 1886 the building was completely rebuilt, and from 1965 to 1968 another restoration was carried out in which the leaded glass windows , the work of Jean Lesquibe from Anglet , were used. The entrance to the church is built in the form of a basket arch , framed with natural stones. On the first floor of the tower a double arched window breaks through the facade, in the second an oculus , on the third floor a round arch illuminates the room in which the bells are located. The helmet is carried on a cornice , which is supported by console-like corbels . An iron cross with a weather vane in the shape of a rooster closes the tower at the top. The nave consists of a nave and has a false boiler vault.
  • Château de Mongaston. The original castle was first mentioned in 1287. The landlords of Mongaston have been known since the 14th century. In the 17th century new buildings were mentioned next to the old castle. In 1929 a fire destroyed a large part of the palace, which has been under restoration work since 1971.
