Viguerie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A viguerie was a medieval judicial body in the south of France. It dates from the Carolingian era and referred to the seat of the imperial administrative officer. With the decline of central power, the importance of the viguerie also declined until it was only the lowest court level that dealt with current affairs. The incumbent was named Viguier .

The vast majority of the Vigueries were dissolved by a royal edict in 1749 . The exception was Provence , where they remained until the French Revolution .
