history

The community developed on alluvial land, sandstone and limestone along the southeast / northwest axis of the Joos River. Graves from the Iron Age that were found in the municipality suggest an early settlement of the area. The manorial rule of Préchacq-Josbaig has been handed down from the 10th century. Then as now, the community is located on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela . In 1249 the seven parishes of the Josbaig valley were defended against the bishop of Oloron under the leadership of the landlord . The 1385 census of Béarn counted 30 households in Préchacq-Josbaig and the village was part of the Bailliage of Oloron. A lay monastery , vassal of the Viscount of Béarn, has been handed down. In the middle of the 17th century the manor was divided into two parts. The owners owned a castle, the foundations of which were found on the banks of the Joos.

Parish church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine

The parish church dedicated to Maria Magdalena is located outside the center of the parish on a promontory at the mouth of the Joos in the Gave d'Oloron. As with all parish churches in the Josbaigtal, there are only a few records and their current condition does not provide any information about the construction date. However, the churches are similar in structure, relatively small in size and with a square bell tower , which in this church is designed with a slate- covered dome with a lantern . The nave of the church has space for three naves and is believed to date from the 18th century. The holy water font , however, is of an older date and possibly dates from the Middle Ages .

The altarpiece in the church choir dates from the second half of the 18th century. It is structured by two pairs of smooth columns that are decorated with falling floral ornaments and ribbons. They have a cornice embellished with four cherubine heads with flower pots on their heads. The painting in the center of the retable illustrates a scene in which an angel catches the blood of Christ , surrounded by Mary and the apostle Peter . A dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit hovers over the upper part of the painting. The wings of the reredos end with depictions of eagles with outspread wings.

In front of the reredos is the tabernacle from the 18th century , which extends downwards . It is structured by six serpentine columns that delimit five fields. Medallions lined with foliage show Christ, the evangelists John and Mary Magdalene at confession . On the central cornice, two angels carry horns of plenty . The wings are formed by eagles that are partially covered by angels.

In a side chapel dedicated to St. Joseph there is also a retable, which is believed to date from the late 17th or early 18th century. It consists of white serpentine pillars adorned with grapes picked by birds, falling roses, and cherubine heads below the cornice. In the middle you can see a statue of St. Joseph from the 19th century.
