Aramits is a French municipality with 669 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the canton of Oloron-Sainte-Marie-1 (until 2015: canton of Aramits ).

Aramits is located about 15 kilometers southwest of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the Barétous valley, the westernmost of the three valleys of the Hoch-Béarn . The highest point in Aramits is the Sommet de Souek (628 m), northwest of the town center.

Aramits was first mentioned in 1270 in the copy book of the Ossau valley . A few years earlier, around 1221, the inhabitants of the Barétous valley renounced the margraves. The community of the villages was administered by the magistrates of the six municipalities that met in the main town of Aramits.

In the census of 1385, 52 families were counted and it was noted that the settlement was in the Bailliage of Oloron .

Like many other settlements in Béarn or in the Basque Country, Aramits is also on the Way of St. James , a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia ( Spain ). In the case of Aramits, it is the way over the Col de la Pierre Saint-Martin , today's Routes départementales 133 and 132. Aramits ran a pilgrimage hostel that was destroyed in the turmoil of the Huguenot Wars around 1569.

In the 17th century, the family of Henry d'Aramitz , a famous musketeer of the French King Louis XIII, lived. , the castle of Labadie in Aramits.

Personalities

Henri d'Aramitz is the model for Alexandre Dumas for his fictional character "Aramis" in his novel " The Three Musketeers ". He was born around 1620 and was a musketeer in the French king's guard from 1640 to 1646 . It is believed that his death occurred between 1673 and 1675.
