Izeste is a street village with houses, the oldest of which date from the 14th century. This structure results from the geographic valley location on an important road across the Pyrenees to Spain. In the census of the Béarn in 1385 twelve households were counted in Izeste and it was noted that the village belonged to the Bailliage of the Archdeaconate of Ossau. The development of the art of weaving and the carving and cutting of stone promoted the development of the community. Izeste is the cradle of a dynasty of renowned stone masons , the Sobernatz. In the center of the village, near the church, there was a tower castle , known since the 13th century. A pillory from marble , not far away in a little square, bears the date "1682" and is a visible sign of the local jurisdiction. There was a lay monastery nearby, the vassal of the Viscount of Béarn, called the House of Abadie, which now houses the offices of the local government.

The structure, which at that time had a height of 20 m, is integrated into the present one, which was built in the 17th to 18th centuries. It is built mainly from local stones and has a high slate roof with a steep slope. The facades are made of straight rubble stones or square blocks made of limestone from the aptium , sometimes mixed with pebbles of various origins and with less regularity. The exposed brickwork on the corners of the building consists of large blocks of bluish- gray Uronian limestone. The house has twin windows , and several arches have been preserved on the north and south sides . An open 30 m high tower is built on the west side.
  • Lay monastery. The originally L-shaped building of the former lay monastery dates from the 16th century. The sculptures on the wedge stones of the large door on the south facade of the east-west wing are made of limestone from Lasseube . A door with a pointed arch allows access to the north-south wing. On the south side a section of the old wall made of Uronic limestone can be seen, which allowed a narrow entrance to the neighboring church.
