Mousseigne Castle in Saint-Dos

Saint-Dos is a French municipality with 160 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie (until 2016: Arrondissement Pau ) and the canton of Orthez et Terres des Gaves et du Sel (until 2015: Canton Salies-de-Béarn ).

The name in the Gascognic language is Sendòs . The inhabitants are called Sendosiens and Sendosiennes .

Saint-Dos is located about 50 km northwest of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the historic province of Béarn on the northern edge of the department.

Saint-Dos is located in the catchment area of ​​the Adour River and lies on the left bank of the Gave d'Oloron , a tributary of the Gave de Pau . One of its tributaries, the Ruisseau L'Entran, crosses the territory of the municipality.

history

Presumably, Saint-Dos developed out of a lakeside settlement from Gallo-Roman times . Traces of trenches and a rampart are evidence of a former defensive system. In the Middle Ages there was probably a landlord . The Béarn census in 1385 counted ten households and the village was part of the Bailliage of Mu, now part of Castagnède .

  • Parish church, dedicated to the Assumption . The current church is a new building from the second half of the 19th century based on plans by the architect Alphonse Bertrand, after the previous church was torn away during a flood at the end of the 18th century. Work began in 1857, was interrupted between 1859 and 1863 and completed shortly afterwards under the direction of Henri d'Arnaudat. The building is part of Baron Frédéric Dombidau de Crouseilhes, minister of religion under Emperor Napoleon III. , has been funded. Between 1866 and 1869, glass windows by the master glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant from Bayonne were used. The windows wear u. a. the names of the donors. The bell tower above the entrance porch with a square helmet had to be repaired in 1905 after a lightning strike.
  • Castle of Saint-Dos. It was built in 1538 to replace a medieval moth . The lord of Saint-Dos restored it in 1728, and it was sacked during the French Revolution . In the following years it came into the possession of Baron Frédéric Dombidau de Crouseilhes and then into the hands of changing owners. Today the building fell apart. However, the facade still shows twin windows and intact furnishings, including an original fireplace.
Mousseigne Castle
  • Mousseigne Castle. It dates from the late 17th or early 18th century and was built by the family of the same name. It became wealthy through overseas trade with India , Saint-Domingue, and Mauritius , and several of its members were magistrates. The last descendant died in 1822.
  • Watermill . It belonged to the previous lord of Saint-Dos. It was built in 1736 after the first mill was swept away by floods. The watermill had two channels, one for draining the water and thus stopping the millstone in the event of a flood. The main canal is now separated and filled up.

Agriculture is traditionally the most important economic factor in the municipality. Saint-Dos is located in the AOC areas of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally produced semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".
