Church and cemetery with Basque grave stelae
Chapel of the Sunharette
  • The Saint-Pierre church in Alçay is dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . It was originally built in the Romanesque style in the 11th or 12th century. After renovations, only the nave , the apse and the choir still contain elements of the original foundation walls. Extensive restorations were carried out in the 19th century. Nevertheless, many cracks can be seen in the apse, which are believed to be due to seismic activity in the region. The church tower is probably from the 17th century. On the south side there is a chapel. A Christ monogram can be seen on the side of the altar inside the church facing the congregation . As with all Basque churches, a gallery for the places traditionally reserved for male visitors during a mass is also built here , completely in wood. A disc-shaped grave cross from the 17th century is set up as a stele near the church . These traditional steles were placed at the head of the deceased against the rising sun, but never with the name of the deceased and rarely with the date of death. The steles were developed in this form between the 16th and 17th centuries instead of grave slabs and only replaced by Christian grave crosses in the 18th century.
  • Sainte-Agnès church in Alçabéhéty. Dedicated to Agnes of Rome , it was also built in the Romanesque style in the 11th or 12th century. A Christ monogram can be seen in the Romanesque tympanum in the south portal, which is now closed . Inside, a painting tells the martyrdom of Agnes of Rome, as can be seen from her attributes : white lamb, martyr's palm and sword . On the side facing the congregation, the altar in this church is decorated with a foliage-bearing cross, the ends of which show the shape of lilies , symbols of purity in the Christian design language.
  • Sunharette Chapel, dedicated to the Apostle Andrew . When the district of Sunharette was raised to the capital of a canton around 1790, the former medieval chapel was replaced by the current building.
  • Farms. The traditional construction of farmhouses differs depending on the region. Since Alçabéhéty is in the Soule region, several farms are based on the architecture of this province. The roofs are typically slate covered hipped roofs with greater roof pitch to guard against the snow. For this reason there is no balcony or half-timbering . The building shape of the farmhouses in Alçabéhéty is rectangular, but in Soule they can also be L- or U-shaped. One thing they have in common, however, is a central entrance hall, called the central eskaratz , from which all other living and working rooms can be reached.
