Before the era and before the village was founded, the place was mentioned in connection with an ancient path of transhumance on the left bank of the Gave, on which the village subsequently developed. In the census of the Béarn in 1385, 24 households were counted in Montfort and the affiliation of the village to the Bailliage of Navarrenx was recorded. At that time there was no landlords locally and therefore no noble residence, because the basic rule belonged for a long time for future barony of Jasses . The situation near the Gave helped the village to develop economically. From the 15th century stones were extracted and numerous craftsmen settled. In the 18th century, potters were counted, then carpenters , blacksmiths , stone cutters , stonemasons , wheelwright , weavers and bakers until the middle of the 20th century . Montfort was also known for making sandals and espadrilles . Each of the three workshops employed four to twelve workers, while around 20 sandaliers worked at home.

Attractions

  • Parish church, dedicated to the Assumption . It was built in the 13th century, also with the aim of supporting the defense of the village. The high and narrow windows of the apse and the massive square bell tower are evidence of its military function. The church could also offer refuge for the villagers as it could be solidly closed from the inside. Two holes in the wall, which can still be seen today, were designed to hold a thick beam to block the entrance. The single nave nave is extended by a polygonal apse. In the 14th century the church was remodeled and lowered. The window and door openings of the apse, nave and bell tower show traces of this reduction in size. The entrance portal in the form of a pointed arch also dates from this period. It has five archivolts that are decorated with oak leaves and Efeuornamenten. These sit on columns with small capitals that are also embellished with ivy. The pillars frame pillars attached to pilasters with capitals embellished with spheres or round fruits. Inside there are four altars , one of which is dedicated to Mary . It is also the most remarkable with its tendril ornaments and a medallion depicting a Madonna with baby Jesus . The church and its entrance portal have been classified as a monument historique since 1920 .
