history

There was a medieval fortification that is said to have played a role in the defense against the Normans . It was mentioned in 1420 by the notaries from Lucq-de-Béarn and again in 1563 under the name castera de Casenave . It was first mentioned in the 10th century. The willow that gave the village its name was a popular raw material among basket makers . The Béarn census in 1385 counted 25 inhabited houses in Saucède, including a lay monastery and three vacant houses. The village was part of the Oloron Bailliage . A ferry across the Gave to the neighboring community of Aren favored the trade in goods from at least the 15th century and until the Second World War . Numerous water mills provided income. The monks of the abbey in Lucq-de-Béarn built a dam for this purpose.

Toponyms and mentions of Saucède were:

  • Villam de Sauceta and Salceta (10th century and 1114 respectively, copy book of the abbey of Lucq-de-Béarn),
  • Villa de Sauceta (12th century, manuscript collection by André Duchesne , volume 114, sheet 80),
  • Saussede (1385, census of the Béarn),
  • Sent-Per de Saucede (1420, notaries from Lucq-de-Béarn),

Parish Church of Saint-Pierre
  • Parish church dedicated to the Apostle Peter . A first church was mentioned in a copy book as early as the 11th century. Today's church is a new building in Gothic style from 1505. The simple bell gable was replaced by a bell tower based on plans by Galhart deu Peyrer. In the second half of the 16th century the Béarn became Protestant and the parish church became a Reformed church under the direction of Pastor Lucas d'Aubé, called Sulac. It was not until the 18th century that the church became Catholic again . It contains numerous furnishings from the 17th to 19th centuries, including a portrait from 1646, a tomb and pulpit from the 18th century, a balustrade in the shape of a hairpin and a decor of the pilasters from the 19th century.
