In addition, the Arriou Tort, a tributary of the Gave d'Oloron , together with its tributary, the Lourou, irrigates the municipality.

history

Orriule developed in a network of many valleys in the Middle Ages . Because of this, farms and houses were widely scattered. In 1385 the village was part of the Bailliage of Navarrenx and the census counted 26 households, including that of the pastor and the landlord . In the 17th and 18th centuries, the landlord named Beuste d'Orriule had a seat in the Béarn Estates Assembly . The manorial rule was in turn subject to the Marquis de Gassion. Due to the favorable geographical location with numerous watercourses, the community devoted itself to agriculture. At the same time, clay and stones, called "Limestone from Lasseube", were extracted from the ground. The center of the community was known for the many craftsmen, u. a. Potters , stone cutters and stonemasons who have settled here.

Toponyms and mentions of Orriule were:

Attractions

  • Parish church, dedicated to the Assumption . The little church was built on a small hill in the middle of the cemetery. Your single nave nave is extended with a semicircular apse . The imposing bell gable is secured by a massive buttress . Its bells are protected by two small canopies. Access to the church is via a simple, nailed door, which is framed by ashlar . A wooden gallery opens up the possibility of offering a place to all members of the parish of the small church. Located in the rear of the nave, the gallery extends from the north to the south wall and is supported by a column in the center aisle. The parapet is worked with finely curved balusters . For reasons of space, access to the gallery is via an external staircase. A gravestone on the floor of the nave reminds that important personalities of the community and the pastor could usually claim a final resting place in the parish church. In addition, only the wealthy could afford a beautiful grave slab. Due to wear and tear, the inscription on the tombstone in the parish church of Orriule does not provide any information about the identity of the deceased. Only the engraved year "1701" and a cross can be seen. The altar in the form of a sarcophagus is made of solid wood. Its front is decorated with two Maltese crosses in a cartouche with curved edges. The tabernacle is decorated with six small serpentine columns. A monogram of Christ , a bunch of grapes and three ears of wheat are engraved on its door. In a niche in the choir there is a statue of the Madonna with baby Jesus. In this depiction, Mary wears a gold-colored cloak and holds the baby Jesus in front of her.
  • Watermills . When the privilege of the nobles to exclusively grind the grain for the whole population fell at the beginning of the 19th century in the course of the French Revolution , the number of water mills increased in this stretch of land with many rivers. However, the industrial upheavals caused many millers to stop their operations. The mill above the Arriou Tort shows a traditional construction with its square floor plan and the massive hipped roof . With a small extension to the small house, it clearly shows its function. This is different with the mill over a tributary of the Saleys, the structure of which, with a high roof with a cat flap between the flat tiles and carefully arranged windows and doors, does not reveal anything of its original function. Both mills are privately owned and cannot be visited.
