history

The community of Sévignacq-Meyracq has its roots in a Gallo-Roman villa of the Romans Sabinius and Marius. In the 1385 census , 29 houses were counted in Sévignacq and six in Meyracq. Both villages belonged to the Bailliage of the Archdeaconate of Ossau. In Sévignacq and Meyracq there were lay monasteries that were subordinate to the Viscount of Béarn. Both villages merged early on, because they have been mentioned under a common name since 1414. To avoid confusion with the municipality of Sévignacq near Thèze , it took the name Sévignacq-Meyracq by imperial decree of December 13, 1866. The manor and the lay monasteries were subject to frequent changes. During the French Revolution , the property of the landlords was confiscated and sold. The economy of the community developed in addition to the numerous craftsmen through its quarries ( gypsum , marble , stone ), its water mills and lime kilns .

Parish church of Saint-Pierre in Sévignacq, in the background the Étigny castle
  • Parish church dedicated to the Apostle Peter . It was built at the beginning of the 17th century and thus in the same period as the lay monastery, known as Étigny Castle. It borders directly on the castle building with its apse and the south facade. The lord of the castle was able to enter the church directly from the castle. A square bell tower rises to the west . It has three floors and is covered with a hood . Its walls are broken through with loopholes , in addition to okuli , which show that it was once built as a fortified church . In the nave , the main nave is separated from the two aisles by two round arches each, which are supported on a central pillar . The south aisle is dedicated to Mary , mother of Jesus Christ . The altar and its reredos are made of painted and gilded wood, decorated with falling leaves and fruits. In a niche of the reredos there is a Madonna with baby Jesus made of gilded wood, which dates from the 18th century. The front of the altar is also made of gilded wood with a medallion that is lined with fine plant scrollwork. A saint is depicted in the medallion, recognizable by the martyr's palm that she holds in her right hand. In the other hand she is carrying an object that is damaged and no longer recognizable. Her headgear is also damaged, so that it can only be assumed that it could be a representation of St. Barbara or St. Lucia . This would coincide with an ancient veneration that found expression in this chapel . The floor is covered with large slabs of Asson sandstone that cover the tombs of people buried in the church. The sacristy appears to be the oldest part of the church and dates from the 16th century. The pediment at the entrance is decorated with the attributes of St. Peter, the two keys and the chains that remind of his captivity. The parish church has been classified as a Monument historique since October 16, 1997 .
Saint-Saturnin Chapel in Meyracq
  • Chapel in Meyracq, dedicated to Saturninus of Toulouse . With the Concordat of 1801 , the two previously separate parishes of Sévignacq and Meyracq of the diocese of Lescar were merged into one, which now belongs to the diocese of Bayonne . The chapel, donated by the landlord and pastor in the Middle Ages , is located just outside the settlement on a slope facing the Gave valley. It allowed the residents of Meyracq to take part in church events there without having to go to Sévignacq. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Saturninus, as evidenced by a preserved plaque at the entrance. It has a simple structure with a nave, which is flanked in the north by a side chapel and in the south by a sacristy. Its square bell tower with an entrance porch has two floors. When the former parish church of Meyracq was downgraded when the two parishes merged, many pieces of furniture were sold. Nevertheless, two retables can be seen, the main one dating from the early 18th century. An old cemetery surrounds the chapel. A large and a small entrance with two high steps grants access. It is surrounded by a wall to prevent wildlife from grazing here or damaging the graves.

  • Étigny Castle. The former lay monastery was rebuilt immediately adjacent to the church in the early 17th century after the earthquakes of 1527 and 1617. Nothing is known about the earlier buildings apart from numerous mentions in the scriptures. The castle is built on an artificial mound, which is believed to be part of an old fortification that guarded the Ossau valley. Arnaud de Casaux was the owner during the Huguenot Wars . In 1560 the doctor received a piece of land of 60 journeaux (1 journal = 1/3 hectare) from Queen Jeanne d'Albret as a reward for the care and recovery of her son, who later became King Henry IV. During the French Revolution, the castle was confiscated, but the Noguès family was able to win it back afterwards. The castle was redesigned in the 19th century. In 1848 the wealthy merchant Lavignolle bought it from Paris and rented it in 1880 to the English aristocrat Palmer Whalley, who came here for his spa treatments in the Pyrenees . In 1892 the d'Etigny family bought the castle. The current property consists of two residential wings, which are decorated with pavilions at the corners , a walled garden, outbuildings and a wooded park. The castle has been classified as a Monument historique since July 9, 1998 .
