Buildings

Parish Church of Saint-Vincent-de-Dax
  • Parish church, dedicated to Vinzenz von Paul , priest in the 17th century and founder of modern Caritas . The church was probably built in the 17th century. Its long building is flanked by two side chapels and covered by a deep-drawn roof. The original elements today are the central entrance and the nave . In the course of a restoration in the 19th century, the bell tower was built and the window was added to the apse . A complete restoration took place in 2002. A memorial plaque to the soldiers of the community who died in the First World War is attached under the porch . In the Basque Country in particular, remembrance is linked to religion. Inside the church, the ceiling is completely painted and covered with panels . The painting consists of garlands of colored vegetable motifs, in the center of the nave along a line of round medallions in square frames. Several portraits can be found below, e.g. B. of Jesus Christ and God the Father , who can be recognized by his right hand, which is directed to heaven as a sign of blessing. Further back is an eagle with outspread wings, a symbol of the Evangelist John . As is customary in most Basque churches, a gallery , which can be reached via an external or internal staircase and is traditionally reserved for men during mass , surrounds the interior, while the women take their places on the ground floor of the nave. In the rare cases where a gallery is absent, women are seated towards the altar on the left, men on the right. In the Saint-Vincent-de-Dax church there is a level of galleries on the side walls, unadorned except for the carved balustrades . During the restoration in 2002, a new, very colorful glass window was added. It shows two round medallions surrounded by inscriptions in the Basque language, plant ornaments and hearts , symbols of the most sacred hearts of Jesus and Mary . The two pictures, arranged one above the other, show a dying man lying in bed, in the upper picture surrounded by several saints and an angel , in the lower picture Mary and Jesus Christ, in both cases ready to receive the soul of the dying person. The tabernacle from 2002 is carved from wood and completely gilded. It is decorated with numerous plant ornaments and statuettes as a bas-relief . Its door is completely covered with the depiction of a bearded saint in episcopal clothing , often attributes of Martin von Tours . The cemetery surrounding the church is terraced. The parapet on its main staircase shows something special. The pillars of the parapet are worked out as large letters that form the tomb “Reposez en paix” ( German  rest in peace ).
  • Garindein Town Hall. Farmhouses in the Basque Country have different architectural styles in the historic provinces of Labourd , Lower Navarra and Soule. The town hall is housed in a former Soule-style farmhouse. A typical feature is the slate roof with four roof surfaces, the steep incline of which is intended to prevent the snow from the nearby Pyrenees from piling up on the roof and damaging the house in winter . The large entrance gate through which the carts drove in earlier times has been retained. Although most of the architectural elements have been modernized, a traditional lintel with an inscription adorns the facade, as can be found on almost all Basque houses, an externally visible sign of regional identity.
