Attractions

  • Parish church in Moncayolle, dedicated to St. Grazia. It was probably built at the beginning of the 17th century, as evidenced by the year "1607" above the northern entrance. Another year, "1715", above the main entrance commemorates the date of the restoration. In 1899 the church received a relic of St. Grazia. It was completely renovated and redecorated for the occasion. The single nave nave is flanked by two side chapels , which form a false transept. The ceiling is designed with a false ribbed vault . The sacristy is located below the semicircular apse , which closes the long building to the east. A bell gable with three pointed roofs rises up on the western facade , the middle one slightly higher than the other two. It is a clocher trinitaire that often occurs in the soul , a symbol for the Trinity . The church's altarpiece extends over two levels, is structured by serpentine columns and framed by wings at the ends. An ornament in the middle represents a scallop , symbol of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela . A tabernacle is integrated into the reredos, which is richly decorated with garlands of plants , cherubine heads , statuettes and historical scenes in bas-relief . The church contains two side altars , the Mary and John the Baptist are dedicated. Mary is embodied in a large statue that stands in a niche on the altar dedicated to her. She is standing upright with her hands clasped in prayer, wearing a white coat and dress with a blue belt. An altarpiece made of wood and gilded and two paintings on both sides of the Madonna complete the work. The altar in honor of John the Baptist has a similar structure with a statue of the saint in a niche, two flanking paintings and a wooden altarpiece. The prophet holds a reed cross in his right hand, one of his iconographic attributes .
  • Larrory Chapel, dedicated to the Apostle Bartholomew . It was probably built between the 16th and 17th centuries.
  • Chapel of Mendibieu, dedicated to Lawrence of Rome . In the cemetery that surrounds the chapel there is a mixture of Christian grave crosses, tombs and disc-shaped grave steles , called Hilarri , which are reminiscent of the Basque tradition before Christianization .
  • House of Matalas. The noble residence was built in the 15th century near the parish church in Moncayolle by the family Goyheneche and is the birthplace of Bernard Goyheneche called Matala, pastor of Moncayolle, which in 1661 at the head of Matala uprising presented, a Souletiner peasants revolt against the increase in royal taxes. The structure consists of a massive main building with twin windows and a square stair tower with small windows attached to the east corner . Its steeply sloping slate roof is typical of Soule houses. In the 20th century the house was restored, which is now owned by a private person and used as a residential building, called Goihenetxea.
  • House Artigau. Typical features of souletin architecture can be seen in this house. It extends over two floors, which are covered by a roof , called coyau , which extends the hipped roof on one side of the building partially beyond the eaves .
