history

Guinarthe is on the over Vézelay in the Yonne department in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté leading St. James to Santiago de Compostela and had a pilgrims' hostel to accommodate the pilgrims . Parenties owned a lay monastery as a vassal of the Viscount of Béarn and at the same time a noble house. The landlords of both villages had a seat in the Béarn Estates Assembly . In the 1385 census of the Béarn, there were 13 households in Guinarthe and nine households in Parenties. Both villages belonged to the Bailliage of Sauveterre.

Toponyms and mentions of Guinarthe and Parenties were:

  • Guinarte and Paranthies (1385, census of the Béarn),
  • Guinarta and Paranthias (around 1540, manuscript collection from the 16th to 18th centuries),
  • Sanctus Martinus de Guinarte and Saint-Pierre de Paranties (1612, publications of the Diocese of Oloron ) and
  • Guinarthe and Paranthies (1750, map by Cassini ).

During the Napoleonic wars , the community played a certain minor role. In February 1814, units of the allied army approaching from Spain, under the command of Arthur Wellesleys , later Duke of Wellington , crossed the parishes to cross the Gave d'Oloron at Sauveterre before the battle of Orthez should take place.

Guinarthe and Parenties merged on June 20, 1842 to form Parenties-Guinarthe, which took its current name Guinarthe-Parenties on May 16, 1845.

Attractions

  • Church in Guinarthe, dedicated to St. Stephen . It is located in the center of Guinarthe on a step above the valley of the season, surrounded by a cemetery. It owes its current appearance to numerous redesigns of the original Romanesque building. The nave with a nave is closed with a semicircular apse . The massive, square bell tower with a flat tent roof was built as a defense tower in the Middle Ages . A large pointed arch made of rubble and sandstone divides the interior of the church into two parts. The two remaining window openings in the apse indicate the original, simple Romanesque construction.
  • Church in Parenties, dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . It is believed to have been built on the ruins of a castle, an assumption that a nearby mansion, the portal , but above all the massive bell tower, support it. He is a tower-style Donjons been built in the Middle Ages, as evidenced by traces of wall holes and consoles is witnessed that were meant to hurdles to keep. The rather simple building has a short nave that ends with a three-sided apse . Four windows without colored lead glass illuminate the interior with the usual furnishings such as an altar , small pews, prayer chair , candle holder, tabernacle and gold-plated altarpiece . Also note the statues of Saints Peter and Paul and a crucifix with a statue of Mary . A white marble plaque under the porch commemorates eleven residents of the community who died in the First World War . Not far from the memorial, one can see six grave slabs set into the ground under the porch. Three of them are tombs of members of the noble Baradieu family, landlords of Bordes from 1743 to 1752. At that time they had a seat in the Béarn Estates Assembly .
  • Dubardier House. The two-storey building probably corresponds to the former lay monastery, which was mentioned in the scriptures in 1385 and has since been extensively redesigned. It is located in the center of Parenties, not far from the church. The entrance gates of the building are well preserved. The first gate has two polyhedra on the top of the side pillars, and the mansard roof shows hatchings with round and triangular front gables. The garden is closed by another portal, this time with two polyhedra and spheres on nine pillars.
  • House Barradieu. It is the former home of the noble Barradieu family, lords of Bordes. At that time an entrance gate with a pointed arch led to the courtyard, which was decorated with four polyhedra. The entrance door is framed with pillars and has an ornate cornice above the entrance. Even today, light still falls into the building through five twin windows and three large portholes in the attic.
  • House Martocq. It is a former farmhouse with a high entrance gate that has retained its original stone border . Although it has been redesigned, the facade shows an older twin window with stick ornamentation . Two smaller window openings are framed with sandstone des Béarn. The wall on the gable of the barn was built with a herringbone pattern as embellishment and provided with holes from a dovecote . These elements suggest a certain wealth of the previous owners.
  • House Salette. A revealing inscription can be found on the wedge of the entrance door. It reads "FPI SALLETTE 1773" and thus allows the date of construction to be determined. The house probably belonged to a landlord of Guinarthe or of Parenties at that time.
  • Parenties scales. At an intersection in Parenties there is a former weighing machine, which has been well restored and has survived earlier times. It is a "Roman" scale, a sliding weight scale that was in daily use in the Middle Ages for weighing animals that were locked in a grid during the weighing process.
