Léren is a French commune of 220 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie (until 2016: Arrondissement Pau ) and the canton of Orthez et Terres des Gaves et du Sel (until 2015: Canton Salies-de-Béarn ).
The name in the Gascognic language is Lèren . The inhabitants are called Lérenois and Lérenoises .

Léren is located about 60 km northwest of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the historic province of Béarn on the northern border with the neighboring Landes department .

Léren is located in the catchment area of the Adour River and lies on the left bank of the Gave d'Oloron , a tributary of the Gave de Pau . A tributary of the Gave de Pau, the Baniou, also called Arriougrand here, flows along the western border of the municipality.
history
The community was founded in the Diocese of Dax and was first mentioned in the 12th century in the copial book of the Abbey of Saint-Jean de Sorde . It was an important transit point for pilgrims on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela . Therefore a hospital for the care of the pilgrims was established and there was a bridge over the Gave since the Middle Ages , which was later replaced by a ford and a ferry. Until 1790 the parish was part of the Duchy of Gramont .

Population development
After peaking the number of inhabitants of around 470 in the first half of the 19th century, the number fell to less than 200 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1990s, before moderate growth to a level of over 200 inhabitants, which has been maintained to this day .

Attractions
- Parish Church of Saint Vincent . The Romanesque church was built in the 12th century by Benedictines from the Abbey of Saint-Jean de Sorde and is therefore one of the oldest churches in the lower reaches of the Gave d'Oloron. Its origins, which date back a long way , can still be seen today in the rectangular floor plan of the nave , the semicircular apse and the bell gable with two bulges. The interior of the nave is covered with wooden beams and is illuminated by arched windows with walls .
- Bergeras Castle. The building was constructed in the 17th century and saw many contemporaries of the Musketeer d'Artagnan . From the 16th century to 1790 it was the seat of the judiciary of the manorial power . The cross- frame windows are made of stone and the upper floors are decorated with oculi . A rectangular tower conceals a wide stone staircase. Outbuildings are arranged around the wide inner courtyard: shed, chicken coop, dovecote , wine cellar.
- House Lassalle, built in the 18th century. The specialty of this hamlet in the Béarn are architectural elements to the style of the farmhouses in the Basque Country recall: the facade of the gable wall, the flat, the court enclosing wall, the distribution of door and window openings, the entrance gate leading to the ezkaratz to seems to lead.
Economy and Infrastructure
Agriculture and services are the main economic drivers of the community. Léren is located in the AOC zones of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".
