Nabas is located in the catchment area of the Adour River on the left bank of the Saison , a tributary of the Gave d'Oloron . The Hourquet, a tributary of the Lafaure, has its source in the municipality.
history
A fortified camp from prehistory in today's Curquou district on a hill above the valley of the season documents an early settlement of the area. The history of the municipality is closely linked to the construction of a ferry over the season in the Middle Ages to allow pilgrims to cross the river on the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela . In Nabas there was a lay monastery , vassal of the Viscount of Bearn. In the course of the 16th century, the practice of witchcraft drove the village. In 1536 five women who had been recognized as witches were hanged on the instructions of the landlord of Méritein . At that time, the fiefs of Nabas and Méritein were linked. In March 1646 Nabas was raised to a baronate . It was subordinate to the Viscount of Béarn and, in addition to Nabas, included the village of Bisqueis, which today belongs to Charre . This award was controversial in the assembly of estates des Béarn, which subsequently made a cancellation. In the 19th century, Nabas became a center for treating diseases with thermal water.
Toponyms and mentions of Nabas were:
- Navars (11th century, according to Pierre de Marcas book Histoire de Béarn , p. 400),
- Navas (1376, census in the Béarn of 1388, sheet 33),
- la nau de Nabas (ferry over the season, 1542, manuscript collection from the 16th to 18th centuries),
- Nabaas and Saint-Laurent de Nabas (1610 and 1656 respectively, publications by the Diocese of Oloron ) and
- Nabas (1750, 1793 and 1801, map from Cassini , Notice Communale or Bulletin des Lois ).
Population development
After a peak in the number of inhabitants of around 330 in the first half of the 19th century, the number fell during short recovery phases until the 1990s to a level of around 110 inhabitants, which is still held today.

Attractions
- Parish church dedicated to Lawrence of Rome . As with numerous churches in the region, the parish church of Nabas was rebuilt in the 17th century after it was destroyed by Protestant troops in the Huguenot Wars . The single-nave nave is accessed via the entrance porch below the bell tower . The two-leaf wooden entrance door fits into a pointed arch with a stone frame. Each door leaf has two panels with a diamond that surrounds a rosette in the middle . The tympanum above the door is lavishly decorated with friezes and other decorative patterns. The bell tower was restored around 1895 after being damaged by a lightning strike. His slate-roofed helmet is decorated with four roof turrets at the corners . At the same time a side chapel was added to the nave. Stained glass windows with representations of personalities and ornaments are signed by the glass painter Louis Gesta from Toulouse and date from 1900 and 1903. The altarpiece from the 18th century is made of painted and gilded wood, an oil painting shows Christ crucified in the middle .
Economy and Infrastructure
Agriculture is the municipality's most important economic factor. In the Camoureste district, 170 hectares of forest are cultivated, while in the Herms district, pasture farming is mainly used. Nabas is located in the AOC zones of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally produced semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".
