  • Ruisseau des Arrecas and its tributary, the Ruisseau de Gensenouse

history

The area was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age, as evidenced by a grotto called “Gandon-Lassus' Refuge”, which has a cave painting. The village is first mentioned in a census in 1385. 30 households were counted and it was noted that the village is in the Bailliage of the Archdeaconate of Aspe. Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, stated that there was a lay monastery dependent on the Viscount of Béarn.

There were baths on the banks of the Gave d'Aydius, which were fed by warm iron-containing water and promised relief for rheumatic complaints, sciatica , back pain or anemia . A lot of visitors for a long time despite the difficult access to the village, by 1920 the number of customers fell to only about twenty customers per season, and after 1944 the bathing facility was closed. It was not until 1959 that the village was connected to the electricity.

Population development

After the peak of almost 900 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number has dropped below 100 to this day. Only since the turn of the millennium does this trend seem to be reversing slightly due to the rise of tourism.

Parish Church of Saint Martin in Aydius
  • Parish church, dedicated to Martin of Tours , built in the 14th century. An entrance in Gothic style has been preserved from this period . Towards the end of the 18th century, it was rebuilt in the neo-Romanesque style, which changed its appearance, in particular with the construction of a bell tower above the entrance. The interior of the three-aisled building, with its colors and gilding, is more in the Baroque style , which is particularly true of the altarpiece . Vibrant colors on the pillars and frames on the wood give the impression of marble. In the center is a statue of Martin in the form of a bishop , an office he held in the 4th century. To his left is a statue of Paul of Tarsus , recognizable by the sword by which he is said to be executed, to his right Simon Peter , recognizable by the keys . On the upper level of the altarpiece, God the Father looks down from above, above it a dove, framed by tendril ornaments, symbolizes the Holy Spirit .
  • Ichante house. In the center of the village there is a house with many wall paintings . They are works by Pastor Joseph Ichante (1777–1857), writer, painter, engraver, sculptor and owner of the house built in 1807. From then on he wandered around in Spain and finally embarked for the Orient , where he went to prison and slipped into slavery . He managed to escape and found refuge with Hester Stanhope , who ruled in an autonomous area near Palmyra . There he died in poor conditions at the age of 87.
