Bastanès is a French municipality with 99 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the canton of Le Cœur de Béarn (until 2015: canton of Navarrenx ).
The name in the Gascognischen language is Bastanés .

Bastanès is about 25 km northwest of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the historic province of Béarn .

Bastanès is located in the catchment area of the Adour River on the right bank of the Gave d'Oloron , a tributary of the Gave de Pau . The following tributaries of the Gave d'Oloron also flow through the local area:
- the Saleys and its tributary, the Herré,
- the Ruisseau les Barthes.
history
According to Pierre de Marca's book Histoire de Béarn , the village was mentioned in the 11th century. In 1375 the name Bastenes appears in the contracts drawn up by the notary Luntz. In the census of 1385, 28 households in Bastanees were counted and it was noted that the settlement is in the Bailliage of Navarrenx . Further mentions of Bastanès are in the following Bastannes ( Reformation of Béarn, around 1540). On the map of Cassini in 1750 the community as is Bastanès entered during the French Revolution in 1793 as Bastanès out during the French Consulate eight years later than Bastanez and Bastanès .
1685 was Gaston III. Fébus , Viscount of Béarn, dissatisfied with the then feudal lord for reasons that are not known today. He confiscated his lands and his castle, of which there are no remains today. For a while the community was known for the quality of the sandstone , which was quarried in one of the local quarries and used to build several buildings in the region.
Population development
After peaking at over 289 residents in the mid-19th century, the number had halved by the 1940s. Raised slightly by the end of the 1980s, the number of residents has subsequently fallen back to around 100.

Attractions
- Bastanès church, dedicated to Lawrence of Rome . The former, simple church was burned down by Protestant troops during the Huguenot Wars in 1569 . The current building is a reconstruction from the 17th century and after extensive reconstruction at the end of the 19th century. The steeple of this church rises up from the north wall.
- Bastanès pigeon tower . On the road towards Orthez there is a pigeon tower from the 17th century, a sign of wealth in earlier times. The bigger a dovecote, the greater the reputation of the owner. This building has a generous size with its height of 6 m and its diameter of 4.70 m. It is built from pebbles with a wall thickness of 60 cm and has a slate roof. The dovecote offers nesting places for over 700 pigeons.
Economy and Infrastructure
Agriculture is a focal point of the economy. Bastanès is located in the AOC areas of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".

Bastanès is crossed by Routes départementales 27 and 947 (former Route nationale 647 ) and is connected to other municipalities in the department by a line from the Transports 64 bus network via Orthez and Navarrenx.
