In early history, a fortified camp was located on a hill ridge that sloped on three sides north of the center of today's municipality . It was oval in shape and had two crescent-shaped section walls , one five to six meters high in the southeast, the other three meters high in the northwest. A round moth with a diameter of six to eight meters and a wooded mound of earth with a ditch and a 30-meter-long parapet complete the complex. During the Middle Ages , the village developed at the foot of this fortification. In the 1385 census of the Béarn, 14 households were counted in Poey and the village was part of the Bailliage of Oloron .

Parish Church of Saint Martin

Parish Church of Saint Martin

According to Pierre de Marca's book Histoire de Béarn , the church consecrated to Martin of Tours has been mentioned in the copial book of the abbey of Lucq-de-Béarn since the 10th century. It is known that it was looked after by the same pastor in 1297 who also directed the parish church of Verdets . Changes were made in the 17th century. The nave has a main aisle and a side aisle, which was added in the 18th century. The apse is flat and rounded at the corners of the wall. The bell tower with a pointed helmet still has a loopholes on its south side.

In 1894 the plaster vault was replaced by a wooden ceiling on which a portrait of the apotheosis of St. Martin was created. It shows the saint ascending to heaven, accompanied by two angels making music . Martin can be recognized by his miter and his crosier , because he was Bishop of Tours in the fourth century. The golden, ethereal light in which the upper part is bathed underlines the sacred atmosphere. The painting is probably the work of the painter Joseph Castaing from Pau , who created similar works for the parish church of Aramits in 1895 .

The choir of the church contains a gilded and polychrome altarpiece from the 18th century. Columns of Solomonic order support the cornice , under which an angel's head looks at the viewer. The columns are surrounded by elegant floral motifs, ears of corn and putti , and at the base there are small rodents. Above the cornice, angels hold the martyr's palm and frame a rectangular pediment on which God the Father can be seen. The artist of the work, Antoine Giraudy, settled in Lescar in 1690 and created other works in the region. In 1723 the retable was repaired by the sculptor Artigave from Sainte-Marie. The central painting, restored in 2009, shows Saint Martin in the scene as he parted his cloak.

The same artist made the tabernacle at the same time . Here you can see an angel similar to the one on the reredos. On the door of the shrine, Jesus shows himself as Ecce homo , above him God the Father. A rich decoration appears around the door with the representation of the Annunciation and statuettes of the Saints Peter , Paulus , Antonius, Ludwig IX. of France and Catherine . The risen Christ is depicted under a dome. A typical element of the artist are sleepy little angels as decorations on the cornice.

The Notre-Dame side chapel in the parish church was built between 1723 and 1727 and has a reredos dating from 1730, created by the workshop of the artist Jean-Baptiste Dartigacave from Sainte-Marie. It is mainly in the colors blue, beige and gold and shows a Madonna with baby Jesus in the middle , a representation that has been widespread since the 17th century. The side panels have falling foliage with the heads of angels and are framed on the left and right by serpent columns with garlands of flowers and grapes. Above the statue of the Virgin Mary, two kneeling angels hold a crown. The base is decorated with geometric motifs. This altar does not have a tabernacle.

The main and side altars with their retables have been classified as Monuments historiques since 1996 .
