Lichos is located in the catchment area of the Adour River . The Saison , a tributary of the Gave d'Oloron , marks the eastern border with the neighboring municipality of Charre. The Borlaas, one of its tributaries, crosses the area of the municipality and flows into the season there.

history

The finds of coins and the foundations of a bridge, which date from the Gallo-Roman period , prove the settlement of the municipality in ancient times . The birth of St. Gratus, the first bishop of the Diocese of Oloron , in the fifth century quickly made the village famous. His birthplace at the entrance to the village was the destination of pilgrimages for several centuries. The saint was invoked in particular to ask for protection against hail. The custom called for ducks to be sacrificed on stormy nights and nailed to the doors of houses. The census in the Béarn in 1385 counted 20 households in Lichos and the associated Haute, today part of the neighboring municipality of Charre, and it was noted that the place belonged to the Bailliage of Sauveterre . The Via Podiensis , one of the four historic St. James' Ways to Santiago de Compostela , has run through Lichos since the Middle Ages . In the 16th century, Lichos, Charre and Haut formed a single community. Like many parishes in Béarn, Lichos suffered from the Huguenot Wars , to which the parish church of Lichos fell victim in 1569.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur
  • Parish church of Lichos, consecrated to Justus and Pastor . Like most places of worship in the Béarn, the parish church of Lichos was set on fire in 1569 by Protestant troops of Jeanne d'Albret , Queen of Navarre , who wanted to enforce the Reformation in her country. It was rebuilt in the 17th century and redesigned in the 19th century. Access to their nave is via a side porch, the roof of which is designed as an extension of the main roof, which, like the roof and the walls of the adjacent square bell tower , is covered with slate . Inside the nave has a gallery on three sides.
  • Remains of a Roman bridge. Remnants of two pillars of a former bridge over the season have survived the centuries, one on the left bank, one in the middle of the river. Although precise dating is not available, the type of masonry suggests Roman origin.
