history

The origins of Castetnau-Camblong go back to the 13th century when two close-knit settlements merged. One of these settlements was Castelnau, which, as the name suggests, was founded near the moth of a feudal lord , mentioned in 1205 as Castrum de Castelnau in the copial book of the diocese of Lescar . In 1289, Gaston VII, Viscount of Béarn, converted the settlement of lo Casteg-nau d'Arribere de Navarrencx into a bastide . At the same time he built a castle in the area of Camplonc . Together with the fortifications of Navarrenx on the opposite side of the Gave, a defensive barrier was created against any attacks by the Viscount von Dax . The census in 1385 counted 53 households in Castegnau e Camlonc and it was noted that the place belongs to the Bailliage of Navarrenx.

Further toponyms and mentions of Camblong followed

  • Nostre-Done de Camplonc (1412, Navarrenx notaries),
  • Saint-Laurent de Camplonc (1620, incorporated into the Diocese of Oloron ) and
  • Camploncq (1675, 16th-18th century manuscript ).

At the end of the Middle Ages , Castetnau-Camblong was almost the same size and importance as Navarrenx. Many town houses that are still preserved today were built there in the 16th and 17th centuries.

On the map of Cassini 1750, both districts are entered as Castelnau and Camblone , separated as Castelnau and Camblong during the French Revolution in 1793, and officially united as Castetnau-Camblong eight years later during the French Consulate .

Population development

After an initial high of over 750 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number fell by a total of more than half by the 1950s with short growth phases. Since then, it has stabilized and the population is growing again.

  • Local church dedicated to Lawrence of Rome . In the 19th century it took three attempts to build a new church, which should be larger than the previous one and be closer to the center of the village. The plan by Baptiste Gascogne, carpenter and architect from Navarrenx, which envisaged a three-aisled building, was finally approved by the parish in 1852. The construction work was carried out until 1858, and the interior was fitted out in 1860. Three years later, six stained glass windows , works by Mauméjean stained glass from Pau, were installed. The bell tower is built in the style of the 17th and 18th centuries. It rises up from the west facade, with a large entrance portal to the church on the ground floor, above three floors, each with an arched wall opening and covered with a slate roof. The roof is called à l'impériale ( German  imperial ) because its curved shape is reminiscent of an imperial crown . On the roof of the bell tower is a lantern with open arcades , the walls of which are lined with shingles made of slate. The roof of the lantern, an analogy of the main roof and also à l'impériale , is provided with a simple metal cross at the top.
