Verdets Town Hall and School

Verdets is a French commune of 270 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the Canton of Oloron-Sainte-Marie-2 (until 2015: Canton of Oloron-Sainte-Marie-Est ).

Verdets is about 5 km to the north-west and therefore in the urban catchment area of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the historic province of Béarn .

In addition to the main settlement, Verdets also includes the hamlets of Bois, Lannelongue, Plaine and Village.

Verdets lies in the catchment area of ​​the Adour River on the right bank of the Gave d'Oloron . The Ruisseau Blalière and the Auronce , tributaries of the Gave, cross the territory of the commune.

history

The area has been populated for a long time, as the discovery of a polished ax attests. The village was first mentioned in the scriptures in the 10th century. In the year 1000 a certain Garcias Galin donated the village to the Benedictine abbey of Lucq-de-Béarn and moved with his family to the abbey. A census in 1385 counted 17 households in Verdets and noted that the village belongs to the Bailliage of Oloron .

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 400 in the first half of the 19th century. Subsequently, the size of the community fell to around 190 by the 1960s, before a recovery phase began that has recently stagnated.

Parish Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste
  • Parish church dedicated to John the Baptist . There was probably a first church as early as the 11th century, but the copial book of the abbey of Lucq-de-Béarn does not mention it. This took place in 1297, because a presbyter led the parish, to which Poey-d'Oloron also belonged. In the 17th century restorations and repairs were made. The nave with a nave is extended by a flat apse with rounded corners. The bell tower was built in 1656. The church now faces west, but traces of an earlier entrance on the bell tower show that it used to face eastward traditionally. It holds inside u. a. a holy water font from the 17th century, a recently built gallery , an altar from the 18th century and a baptismal font that could previously have been a wine press . The altarpiece of the altar dates from the 17th century. It consists of serpent columns with vines and birds and a gable with the representation of God the Father . The side wings of the altar are decorated with statues of John the Baptist and a pilgrim . In the middle there is a painting with the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. The tabernacle has two shrines and is decorated with the themes of the Annunciation and the Crucifixion .
